EFFECTS OF EMOTIONS ON SEMANTIC CATEGORISATION

Abstract: Emotions are an important component of human communication, guiding understanding and initiating actions. In the talk I will present my master thesis in which I investigated how emotions influence language processing in a semantic categorisation task. Unlike previous emotion-language interference studies, my experiments employed non-emotional target words. Reaction times and error rates of native German speakers categorising words while being distracted by photographs of emotional faces were analysed. The results suggest that emotions do not influence language processing per se but rather form a decision bias - a positive face primes a positive response, a negative one primes a negative response.
